Small Business Logo Design

Do It Yourself?Putting time and money into developing a small business logo design is probably not high on your priority list of you are a new entrepreneur or are opening a business. No doubt you have all kinds of expenses and you’re trying to figure out where to invest each precious dollar.

So, a small business logo design might seem like a luxury. I assure you it is not.

Many business owners think they can save a few bucks by designing something themselves.  It’s easy to grab some clip art or pay $100 for a cookie-cutter online design.

It’s easy to persuade yourself into thinking that your logo isn’t really all that important. It won’t hurt your business to skimp on this.

I urge you to think again.

In Order To Get Profitable
You Have to First Get Noticed

Small business owners rely upon referrals and repeat business to keep them going long term. If you have the luxury of more business than you know what to do with, and people love your product or service so much that the sign on your door or the design of the business card makes no difference, then by all means—save a few bucks on marketing.

While having a quality logo will probably take your business even farther, you may not need a logo to be successful. You already are!

For most new businesses, however, there is a critical period of time I call “lift off”. Like an airplane that has just so much runway before it had better be in the air, most businesses need to be profitable by a certain point or they don’t last long term. There are three words you need to know about getting lift off:

Visibility
Credibility
Profitability

Visibility

visibilityA professional small business logo design helps dramatically with the first step —visibility. When you have business cards, signs, trucks, a web site, logo-wear, promotional items, brochures, etc. they all communicate a powerful, appealing, and authentic message about your business. It entices people to check your business out.

Potential clients are curious. Without an appealing and consistent visual symbol representing your enterprise, no one knows you are there. You are at risk of being like the proverbial tree that falls in the forest. “If a business starts, and no one knows it is there, does it survive?”

Hmmm, probably not.

Credibility

credibilityThe only thing worse than not having any visibility, is being highly visible with amateur marketing materials. While it may help a little to get the word out to people who really need what you have to offer no matter what, you are shooting yourself in the foot every time you make an impression.

There is a café near my home that is failing miserably. They have let go all their employees and the family is hanging on trying to make a go of it. I predicted their demise a year ago when I saw their name and logo. Both the name and logo are unappealing and literally drive away business. They thought they were saving money, but in the end they never had any credibility.

Compared to what they spend on rent and employee salaries, they could have had a name and logo and attracted thousands of dollars in business. A strong small business logo design is not a luxury. It is an essential component to being professional and credible. The right brand builds trust, and that is what you need to get people to give you a try.

Profitability

profitabilityMany of my clients have beaten the odds for small business survival and long-term success. I drive around town and see my logo designs on shops, schools, offices, car washes, and trucks. Many of them I designed 10 to 15 years ago. What did these business owners understand that so many others don’t? I believe they made a number of smart decisions when they started. One of those decisions was to be visible and credible so that they could very quickly become profitable.

I would love to help you join them. I am offering a seat ($50 value) at my next small business Idea Party to the first 3 business owners who contact me by the first of the month and want to discover creative ways to launch their business.
